๐ For landlords
Sensory environment guidelines
The plain-language standards behind the Neuroaffirming Landlord Pledge. Each one exists because sensory regulation is a physical need. Follow them and you join a small, trusted set of landlords whose homes are genuinely safe for neurodivergent people.
๐ก Light
Warm bulbs in every shared space. Fluorescent tubes are a physical barrier for many people: the flicker, the hum, and the glare are felt, not imagined. If a fixture is still fluorescent, commit in writing to swapping it for warm, dimmable lighting before you list the room as neuroaffirming. Heavy or blackout curtains are welcome too.
๐ Sound
Agree quiet hours with the household and write them on the listing. Be honest about appliance noise in your sensory audit: a humming fridge matters to the person it keeps awake. Rugs on hard floors soften footsteps. Give notice before DIY noise or noisy deliveries, the same way you give notice before visits.
๐ Smell
Ventilation that actually works in kitchens and bathrooms. No strong air fresheners in shared hallways: they are not neutral, they are triggers for many people. Flag strong-smelling work like painting in advance, and ask before doing it in shared areas.
๐งบ Visual calm
Keep shared surfaces clear and walkways uncluttered. Cluttered floors and doorways are a real obstacle for dyspraxic people, and visual clutter can overwhelm anyone's nervous system. A tenant's own room is theirs: no comments, no rules, no surprise inspections.
๐ช Sensory-first viewings
At least 48 hours' notice before any viewing, as your pledge promises. Say who will be present. Leave the lights as they normally are, so people see the real home. Offer a video walkthrough first so someone can map the space before arriving. Viewings are short, can end at any moment, and never require a decision on the day.
๐ค The standing rule
Every tenant's needs are different and varied. If someone asks for a sensory adjustment that is not listed here, the answer starts with 'what would help?', never a debate. These adjustments are a necessity for sensory regulation, not a whim.
๐ฟ Thank you for reading all of it.
These standards are what seekers trust the badge for. Keep them and your rooms will stay quietly in demand.
